Commodore's Welcome Message

Welcome to the Upper Thames Motor Yacht Club,  we  are  a  club  of some 100 boats which gives us a significant presence on the River Thames. Our base is in a picturesque Sonning backwater where we have a well-equipped club house, grounds and moorings. Our membership is spread over a very wide area with members regularly travelling from as far as Kent, Warwickshire and the Sussex coast, and the boats range from 23’ through to 48’ Cruisers.

The aims and objectives of the club are centred around Motor boating on the Thames, but we also cruise abroad and boast a very full social calendar.

As an approved RYA training establishment we are able to help members improve their boating skills and knowledge, either through formal RYA training, or in a more relaxed informal way where we can always find someone to mentor the less experienced, be it simple boat handling, first time tidal, or a Yachtmaster question.
I am proud to be able to welcome you to the UTMYC either as a web visitor, a member of another club, or a prospective member, further contact details are available here.

Visitors and members of other clubs are always most welcome. If you are interested in finding out more, or joining the Club, you may contact us here.

Non Tidal Cruising

Based centrally at Sonning, we are ideally sited for cruising down river to Henley, Marlow and Royal Windsor or up to and beyond the dreaming spires of Oxford. You may have to duck! There are regular weekend cruises with a relaxed BBQ and overnight stop, throughout the season.

Tidal Cruising

Although non-tidal based, members regularly cruise to London and the Continent, either in the company of friends or with the club. Both provide the comfort of cruising with others and a chance to give stress to the turbos. We can not always guarantee a Naval escort!

Training

UTMYC is a registered RYA Training Establishment.  Throughout the winter months training is offered to members to obtain RYA Yachtmaster and Day Skipper qualifications.  First Aid, Radar and GMDSS is also offered.  Training is provided on the water by experienced club skippers for new comers.

Social

As well as the informal evenings where members bring along their own food, the club organises barbeques, themed events and formal evenings in the clubhouse as well as at other locations. The social events are very popular and well supported - they offer a super evening in great company.
